ahh life in the 21st century

Yesterday before I took Eric to school, our conversation went as follows:

Eric: Where are my jeans?

Ashley: Did you check the dirty laundry?

Eric: Damn.  I guess I’ll wear my shorts.

Ashley: Why don’t you just pull them out?  It’s impossible to tell that jeans are dirty unless they have visibly junk splattered across them.

Eric: They will smell like dirty laundry.  I’ll just have to do laundry when I get home.

So I was home for a while after dropping Eric off and I thought to myself, “I could just start the laundry now.”  Then I didn’t.  I also thought to myself after filling my water bottle from our Pür water filter in the fridge, “I should refill this before I go to work.”  Then I didn’t.

At about 5:30p, I’m still at work and Eric has just gotten home from school.  Our conversation went as follows:

Eric: (In a text message) Emergency call immediately!

Ashley: (On the phone) What happened?!

Eric: There’s no water.

Ashley: What the hell does that mean?!

Eric: There is no water coming out of any of the faucets or the shower or the toilets.

Double damn.  After some investigation, it turns out the the main water line for the entire neighborhood was “broke” (using the quotes because I don’t know what that entails exactly), and that no one had had water since 2p.  WTF, mate?

the essence of...flushing.

So after work I picked up Eric, and we went to the store to get some jugs of water so that we could flush the toilet and some larger jugs of water for drinking and, assuming they hadn’t fixed the problem by the next morning, for washing faces and hands and all that jazz.

We get home with a total of 6 gallons of water for the toilets and 5 gallons of drinking water.  I go to turn on the kitchen faucet and after much obscene spluttering, the water was flowing again.  So now we have 11 gallons of water that we have almost no use for, and we’ll just have to either A) save them for the next time something ridiculous like this happens or B) slowly work our way through all of it.  I guess we could ship it off to a third world country, but in all honesty it would probably amount to more in shipping costs than the warm fuzzy feeling you get from helping someone would be worth.

If you remember, not too long ago I had a post about when we were dark on electricity for a couple hours.  That was worse.  At least we can watch movies with no water.
